Vitamin inquiry for Dr.'s or expertFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netMon, 31 Mar 2003 10:38:13 -0600 (CST)
I've been advised by various individuals that I need a calcium suppliment. This is an assessment I agree with because since becoming pregnant I haven't been able to keep milk or cheese down and I know I'm getting precious little in my diet. However, I am concerned about how much I should be taking considering there is already some in my pre-natal vitamins. I purchased an over-the-counter vitamin suppliment consisting of 1000mg of calcium with 400mg of magnesium and 15mg of zinc. My prenatal vitamins contain 250mg of calcium (as calcium carbonate), 10mg of magnesium, and 25mg of zinc. So, my question is, if I take both each day, is the combined dosage of 1250mg of calcium, 410mg of magnesium, and 40mg of zinc in addition to what little I may be getting in my diet dangerous or potentially harmful for either me or my fetus? Please let me know if these levels are safe. Thank you.
