Home pregnancy test accuracy if you are 4 months or more late

I was wondering if a hpt can detect pregnancy if you take it when you have missed 4 periods. My cousin is having a hard time because she isn't getting her period, and is having some pregnancy syptoms. (frequent urination, morning sickness with throwing up...), yet the tests are negative. I was debating gettng a test and taking it myself again when a doctors test confirmed I am pg just to see. She's terrified of being told she can't have kids, so she is always saying she'll see a doctor but never gets an appointment. I know she can have kids even with irregular periods, as my mom did.
