I read an article somewhere that talked about this very thing, but can't remember where (but in the last year). Supposedly this is a throwback from earlier times. The pregnant woman smelled different and the man reacted to that and the woman's hormones so he'd stay with her and protect her more. Kind of a way to keep the caveman home to protect the mommy. I was pregnant at the time and was watching my hubby to see if he reacted differently to me. Thought he was a bit more loving than usual (he washed the dishes for me every day!).
