Carol, At 8 weeks they should be able to find a heartbeat using a doppler. But then again, this depends on the kind of doppler, newer models tend to pick up a heartbeat earlier than older dopplers. Some ob/gyn order an u/s to check for heartbeat and some don't. Mine did because I had irregular cycles and didn't know how far along I was. It all depends on the situation. If you're healthy, pretty certain about your dates, and they detect a heartbeat, there should be no reason to do an u/s.
