Re: How to increase breast milk supply

My milk took about 2 weeks to really come in. In the meantime, I nursed my son using a supplemental nursing system (ask your ob or the hospital about this). Basically, it allowed him to nurse and stimulate my milk supply, but gave him formula through a tiny tube that was attached to my breast (sounds crazy- but it is really simple). Be patient- your milk will come in. Breastfeeding was really hard for me until about 6 weeks, when suddenly we both got the hang of it. My son is 4 months and we are still going strong. The SNS calmed my very hungry son without having to introduce a bottle and shortly after my milk really came in. Resisting the temptation to supplement with bottles was really important to get the milk to come in. It's hard not to get discouraged in the beginning- I wanted to quit every day! But I promise, it does get easier!! I didn't start pumping until about 3 weeks. The lactation consultant i worked with discouraged me from pumping too soon, as the baby was nursing every 1-2 hours.

Good luck!
