Dear Claire,

I think this is one of the few situations in life when you really can have it both ways - a state wedding followed by a large private ceremony which can include a religious wedding if those were your plans. It's actually common in the US to get married in that way, for insurance and similar reasons.

You never want to be without insurance in the US. You could fall down on ice and break a leg tomorrow. Accidents happen. If your fiancee is having sex with you, and you don't have insurance, it makes sense that he should protect you by having a courthouse marriage earlier than you were planning.
