Alpha Thalassemia and High Risk PregnancyFrom: High (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 3 Feb 2003 10:06:48 -0600 (CST)
Hi, Doctor: I have Alpha Thalassemia. It is diagnosed by the fact that I consistantly have low MCV level (67-70) and other CBC numbers are nomal before I am pregnant. Hemoglobins (A, A2, H, F,...) are all normal. I am Asian, so probably I have Cis alpha thalassemia trait. My hemoglobin level was 12.5 before I am pregnant. I had 9.4 hemoglobin when I was 24 week pregnant. Now I am about 28 week pregnant. I did not run DNA test. My husband did not run DNA test, either. However, my husband just had a CBC blood test, and his results, including MCV (92), are all normal. Please tell me if I fall in the category of HIGH RISK PREGNANCY. Any special risk could happen to me or the baby during my delivery? Any special risk could happent during the third trimester? What should I do or can I do to prevent? Thank you a lot. -High risker?
