Re: 24 weeks and painful contractionsFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netMon, 3 Feb 2003 08:21:56 -0600 (CST)
Oddly, I have generally reassuring info on these two drugs. My doc said augmentin was fine - it is a hardcore antibiotic - and I looked it up online and it was OK in pregnancy. Oftentimes they put you on antibiotics in case you have UTI or something else (some other undiagnosed infection) because those can cause pre-term labor. As for terbutaline, I think it is safest of all anti-contraction drugs... it has been used for 30 years with no reports of long-term bad problems. I know a woman who had terbutaline for the last 15 weeks of all THREE of her pregnancies (I thought she was crazy to have 3 babies- she had some kind of problem that caused extreme preterm labor). It made her feel like HELL (racing heart, etc) but she carried 3 babies to term despite problems starting really really early (in one case, 17 weeks). Her 3 boys are fine, healthy and smart. You'll be OK- it sucks but it's better than the alternative.
