24 weeks and painful contractionsFrom: Anon (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 2 Feb 2003 20:48:18 -0600 (CST)
I am almost 25 weeks and earlier this week I awoke with painful contractions, which occurred about every 10 minutes. I also had lower back pain so when I called my doctor she told me to go to the hospital. When I got there, they hooked me up to a monitor to measure my contractions and the baby's heartrate. They checked my cervix and said that it was still long but really soft. Also said that it was open a fingertip in the front but the back was still closed. After about half an hour of monitoring, they gave me an injection of terbutaline and the contractions stopped. The back pain disappeared soon after. They sent me home with instructions to see my doctor the next day. My doctor put me on partial-bedrest and a couple of medications. One was an antibiotic (even though I have no infection) called Augmentin 875mg. The other is oral Terbutaline 5mg to prevent contractions. I am leery about taking any medications while pregnant. The slip the pharmacist gave me with the Augmentin stated that it should only be used in pregnant women if the doctor feels the dangers of not taking it outweigh the risks to the developing fetus. I am supposed to take 2.5mg every 6 hours of the Terbutaline but it makes my heart race and I shake really bad. I know that this is a side effect of the medicine but if it makes me feel that awful, what is it doing to the baby? Are these medications safe for the fetus? If not, how will it affect the baby? When I asked my doctor, she kind of avoided my question which makes me worry even more. Thanks in advance for your answers!
