An obstetrician is a doctor who specializes in treating women during pregnancy and childbirth. A gynecologist specializes in taking care of women's needs as they pertain to our reproductive systems- meaning a gynecologist would give you an annual vaginal exam and PAP test, but wouldn't be the doc you'd go see if you had a cold. Many doctors are both obstetricians and gynecologists, as the two areas are so closely related.

To be a doctor you have to get very good grades in high school and in a four-year "pre-medical" college program, and then attend medical school and complete internships and residencies. I'm sure a doctor could tell you how long it would take from start to finish. It is a very demanding course of study, but the work can be rewarding and can also pay well. Good luck to you in your career decisions.
