Postpartum and breakthrough bleedingFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 31 Jan 2003 12:39:29 -0600 (CST)
I am 9 weeks postpartum from a normal vaginal delievery. I experienced a few weeks postpartum bleeding and then I got my period at almost 6 weeks postpartum. I saw my ob for my 6 week checkup and everything was fine. He gave me an RX for birth control pills and I started them the following Sunday after my period began. The kind he has me taking is Ortho-Tricyclen LO. On cycle day 15 I started having breakthrough spotting which turned into breakthrough bleeding (similar to my normal period). I called my ob and he said he did not want to change my BC and I should wait 2-3 cycles for my body to adjust to the pill unless the bleeding becomes very heavy. I said "Ok, I can live with that". I am now on cycle day 22 and have what looks like my normal period (not spotting) and am bleeding bright red. I would be due to have my normal period in a few days. It it really ok to go on bleeding this long? If I get my period, that will make probably 2 - 3 weeks of continual bleeding. When I start my next pack of BC pills can I expect a break from the bleeding? I guess I am getting a little frustrated because I have only had about 1 week of break from bleeding of some sort (postpartum then period then breakthrough) since my daughter was born 9 weeks ago. I will put up with it if it is not dangerous. What do you think?
