I'm not a doc, but have had multiple membrane strippings- basically they are detaching the sac of waters from the cervix (as it was explained to me). Here is a more complete explanation- http://www.storknet.com/cubbies/childbirth/excf5.htm

It feels like a vigorous internal exam- uncomfortable, but not really painful.
