Re: Ultrasound Sonogram AccuracyFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netFri, 24 Jan 2003 16:35:25 -0600 (CST)
Wendell, I think I know where the confusion is coming from. Ultrasound and doctors who "date" your pregnancy and tell you that you are 14 weeks 1 day are counting from the first day of your girlfriend's last menstrual period, which presumably is 2 weeks before she ovulated. So you and your girlfriend are counting 12 weeks from when you had sex on Oct. 22 but the doctor is counting from two weeks prior to that. So you all are actually EXACTLY on track. When doctors talk about 40 weeks of pregnancy (you are due at the end of 40 weeks) they are talking from the first day of your girlfriend's last menstrual period. I am 20 weeks pregnant right now according to all my doctors, but it has been only 18 weeks since my husband and I engaged in baby-making sex and actually conceived. It's really a bit kooky but that's just how the Medical People count. Got it? OK, good luck!!
