Regular Use of Xanax During Early PregnancyFrom: Wade (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 13 Jan 2003 21:24:38 -0800 (PST)
My wife has severe anxiety and takes 2mg of Xanax daily. We have recently learned that she is about 6-8 weeks pregnant and we are very concerned, especially after reading that benzos can increase the risk of birth defects. She is unable to quit her Xanax "cold turkey" without suffering severe withdrawl that affects her physical as well as psychological health. At this point, since she's 2/3 through her first trimester should we expect that whatever damage has been done is cannot be undone? Should we undergo frequent ultrasound imaging to monitor the baby's development? What are the continued risks since I know that she'll not be able to completely stop taking the Xanax without weening herself off for a long period of time? - Wade
