Dear Anonymous: First, I am so sorry for your heartbreaking loss. Background on me - I had a twin-partial molar pregnancy in October 2000 and joined an online support group shortly thereafter. Regarding if it's possible for you to suffer a molar: Unfortunately, very possible.

Regarding the usual causes and risk factors: The "usual causes and symptoms" noted in textbooks and other literature seems to be completely off the mark, according to the molar pregnancy support group of approximately 300 women. Most of us don't have the risk factors nor did we suffer the textbook symptoms.

Regarding your doc: It is absolutely IMPERATIVE that you continue to be monitored via hcg blood testing to ensure your hcg level goes to negative (<5) and stays there for a minimum of 3 months, more commonly 6 months. The chances of the molar tissue regenerating and putting your health at risk are low, but not monitoring you would just be taking such an unnecessary chance. Please be proactive with your doctor on this - you need to be monitored (via hcg blood testing) weekly until negative, then monthly for the duration of your waiting period.

Regarding the pains you are experiencing: Pains of the nature you are describing could be attributed to the D&C, depending upon how recently the operation was performed, but I would still call the doc's office and advise him if I were you.

Regarding molar diagnosis: A molar pregnancy is not diagnosed without clear evidence - if memory serves, there are five markers for a molar. Sounds like you suffered a partial molar, in which there was a fetus but something just went haywire with the placenta.

There is nothing you did that caused this, nothing you could have done to prevent it and should you choose to ttc following your waiting period, there is no reason to think you will have a repeat molar (your chances are only 1% higher than someone who hasn't had a molar). If this gives you a little hope, we went on to have a perfect full-term healthy son following my wait period. Best of luck to you, Lisa P.
