Melissa, Thanks for the interesting article. I always like to learn more about CF. One thing that I did notice though was that although the article says what you quoted, it also says "An individual with CBAVD who is planning a pregnancy should be offered CF carrier screening and told of his 75% risk of having a CF mutation. More importantly, his reproductive partner should be offered carrier testing. If she has a detectable CF mutation, the couple will have an increased risk of CF in their offspring even if a mutation cannot be identified in him. If his reproductive partner does not have a detectable mutation, the couple's risk for a child with CF will be significantly reduced. Identifying a mutation in both partners means there is a 1 in 4 risk of having a child with CF. Knowing parental mutations allows for preimplantation genetic diagnosis to be performed on the couple's embryos to select only ones free of CF for implantation." I think that what this is telling you is: 1) it would be a good idea to get tested to see if you are a carrier, and 2) either way, they can do a "preimplantation genetic diagnosis on the embryo before implantation" which hopefully would rule out any embryos with CF. Actually, thanks for bringing this article to my attention because I did not know they could do pre-screen embryos yet. I knew that they had researched this possibility several years ago, but it is nice to know that they have now expanded their research to be able to offer this option to the CF patients and their families.

By the way, I realize that my previous message may have listed things you already knew and didn't need me to tell you about. If so, I'm sorry. I just wanted to make sure you understood that if you are a non-carrier, it would help you so much with your concerns. Also, as I said in my earlier message, drs can definately identify a CF child or a carrier child by amnio because they did this with my sister's 2nd pregnancy. I hope this helps.

I wish the best of luck to you and your husband!
