Dilated kidney in 20 week fetal ultrasound

Please explain what dilated kidneys means. I had my 20 week ultrasound today and the Dr. noted dialated kidneys. He was no too concerned. He said most of the time it will correct itself by the next ultrasound (at 30-32 weeks). If not corrected at that time we will do ultrasounds of the kidneys after birth. Can you please tell me what happens if this problem is not corrected on it's own? And...does any one have a rough estimate of how often this corrects itself (percent)? What causes the kidneys to dilate? Thanks for your help.
