Fetal Hiccup QuestionFrom: Terri (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 6 Jan 2003 22:31:00 -0600 (CST)
Is there an "average" number of times per day that a fetus gets the hiccups? I am 34 weeks pregnant and notice my baby hiccups at least 2x's per day, sometimes as much as 4-5x's. I never thought much of it, but today I read in a medical article that excessive hiccups can be a sign of reduced oxygen to the fetus, possibly a result of cord restriction. At a sonogram a couple weeks ago, I was told that it appears my baby has the cord around her neck... my dr said that this isn't something to worry about, but after reading the article linking hiccups to nuchal cord, I am concerned. It also said that most women report noticing frequent bouts of fetal hiccups prior to lack of fetal movement and subsequent fetal demise.... talk about freaking out this already paranoid pregnant mom!! Is there any truth to this correlation? I can't find ANYWHERE how often a baby should get the hiccups! Thanks,
-- Terri
