Re: Marijuana and male fertilityFrom: Hope (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 6 Jan 2003 07:31:38 -0600 (CST)
I wouldn't get a divorce... but here's some info-- excerpts, see links for more http://www.spermconfirm.com/MARIJUANA.html However, it is clearly documented by laboratory studies that THC in cannabis sativa, more commonly known as pot or marijuana, does have an adverse affect upon male fertility. The following paragraphs contain important marijuana facts! Cannabis is an illegal psychoactive drug in most countries with the exception of limited medicinal uses, is a drug known to cause hallucinations, euphoria and sedation. Marijuana effects, through long-term use, include amotivational syndrome characterized by decreased motivation and preoccupation with drug intoxication. Other marijuana effects include panic attacks and anxiety. Aside from its psychoactive effects, marijuana may also decrease both female and male fertility. http://www.ivillagehealth.com/experts/fertility/qas/0,11816,166255_844,00.html Both marijuana and cigarettes are associated with breaks in the DNA of sperm. The more you smoke, whether it is marijuana or tobacco, the more DNA breaks occur. The effect does not seem to be greater with marijuana. However, marijuana is metabolized in the liver, and unlike tobacco, it can affect the liver over the long term in such a way as to increase estrogen levels. Higher estrogen levels in males can increase the risk of abnormal sperm counts or motility. If your semen analysis is normal, this is not likely an issue.
