Re: Terbutaline's side effects on my babyFrom: Katya (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 31 Dec 2002 08:00:13 -0600 (CST)
Dear Sue, I am not a doctor and hope one will answer soon... I think in making any medical decision, a person weighs benefits and risks. The fact that medicine does not know why your first child has a neurological disorder underscores the uncertainties of such a decision. So, let's look at the current situation. Tertbutaline is a well-known drug that has been on the market for a while. It's not LINKED to neurological or any other discorder in babies in the general population. There are always possibilities of problems in an individual case, but you have to weigh that against medical certainties. What is linked to all sorts of problems (neurological, developmental, fine motor skill, etc) is prematurity, especially such early prematurity as 30 weeks. Would a morphine shot have been enough? Your doctor, who was there with you and saw your contractions, did not think so. He or she thought, "Wow. These are real contractions. They need to stop or the baby will come out early and may develop problems". So, the doctor gave you the medicine that worked, and that is not linked to baby problems based on the scientific research. She and you chose the path of lesser risk - much lesser, I would say. That's the best medical decision anyone can make. Best wishes to you, and try to keep sane! (easier said than done, I know...)
