Re: mifepristone -What are the risks of medical abortion? doctors pls answerFrom: tanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 29 Dec 2002 23:19:37 -0600 (CST)
I know you want a dr's answer about the risks, but please let me share my experience with mifeprex with you. The reason why I want to share this with you is because most docs, nurses, and counselors will not tell you about what will actually happen... you get to see a video where the women are all pleased about their choice and made it seem as though it were a breeze. Only after my experience, I asked around and surfed the net and found out it was far from being unusual. Two hours after taking Mifeprex, I vomited every 20-30 minutes for the next 48 hours. The nurse said, oh, that's normal. Then you insert suppositories to make your uterus contract and pass the tissue. Have you ever had a painful miscarriage? I had one at 12 weeks, I had to be wheeled in to the emergency room because I was in so much pain. The contractions with this medication felt exactly the same. I couldn't take any pain medication because I couldn't keep any down. This lasted for 6 hours. Then you must go back to the doctor two weeks later. I had retained tissue and was given the option of more of the medication to make my uterus contract again, or of having a d&c. I chose the latter, there was no way I was going to put myself through that pain again. Another thing they tell you is that if the Mifeprex is not successful, then you MUST have a surgical abortion. There is a high risk of the embryo developing birth defects if it manages to survive the Mifeprex, but nobody can force you to have a surgical abortion against your will.
