I am pretty sure, but let a doctor correct this if I am wrong, that the risk of infection from checking your cervix is mostly a concern around your due date because the amniotic sac may have a small puncture without you knowing it. During early pregnancy, I don't think it is as much of a concern. If you think about it, a penis is not a very clean thing. A washed hand in comparison could be quite clean. But I would love to hear alternative views. Good luck.
