The baby is surrounded by water (amniotic fluid) which acts as a muffler -- it's like listening to sounds underwater. The baby surely heard the noise and was probably disturbed by it but if your hearing is OK there's is too. Also, they make fire alarms not only loud but very annoying. This raises your anxiety and makes you more likely to leave the environment to escape the shrill. The contractions could have been more a result of your stress than the sound itself. I'm 34 weeks too! Good luck!
