Mississippi,

Apparently you are going to purchase insurance in March when his current coverage expires. This is a smart move because gaps in coverage might allow "preexisting conditions" exclusions to kick in later on when you are on a new insurance plan. Also, if you had a gap in coverage and and one of you developed a serious illness during that time, you might find you will not be able to get any insurance at any price.

Let's do the math here. $237 extra a month times 12 months is $2844, essentially the same price as a NORMAL VAGINAL DELIVERY quoted above. What if you need a C-section or serious complications develop? You'd be covered by insurance in those cases. If you do what Rebecca recommends you could lose everything you own.

Sometimes it makes sense not to insure some expenses. For instance, you could pay cash for routine office visits and insure the major expenses with a higher deductible with a cap on out of pocket expenses. This would save you considerable money on monthly insurance premiums.

Ask yourself how much you can afford to lose. If you own a home and other assets, do you want to risk losing that to pay high medical bills?
