Alice,
I dont know if this will sway you at all. You need to do what your gut is
telling you to do. At any rate, I know of 2 women who have lost babies as
the result of amnio. Actually, one was inconclusive as to whether the amnio
caused the loss or whether it would've happened anyway. The other was
definitely amnio related. I know this is very rare to know 2 people who have
had such a horrific loss, but it taught me that I would never have one
myself.
On the flip side, I'm sure there are many women ready to swear by it, for
peace of mind. I think that if you would continue with a pregnancy of, say a
Down's baby, and wouldn't abort anyway, why take the risk of the amnio?
Decision is yours, just weigh the pros and cons carefully.
