Amnio... am I making the best decision?From: Alice (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 4 Dec 2002 16:11:29 -0600 (CST)
I will be 38 years old when my baby is due (4/28/03). I had the first trimester screening which estimated my risk for down syndrome to be 1 in 776 based on the nuchal measurement (1.5 mm) and my blood sample. My triple screen showed risk of down syndrome to be less than 1 in 5,000. I had a level II ultrasound which showed no markers. I thought I could feel good about these odds but when I talked to my ob, he said these tests are only screens and have up to 35% margin of error. He said the only way to know for sure is with an amnio. I scheduled an amnio for this Friday. My question is... am I putting the baby at risk unnecessarily by having the amnio? If I were your patient with these test results, what would you be advising? Please help... this is such an important decision for me. Thank you.
