Is an episiotomy really that bad?

Hi, I'm 37 weeks pregnant with my first child. I've been reading a lot about episiotomies, and how bad they are. The thing is, now I am more afraid of having to have an epistiotomy than of labor itslef.

My question is : Are epistiotomies really that bad? Is it really more painful, slower to heal, painful sex after it forever? Aren't there any positive points in an episisiotomy, do some people have it with no problems? Or is it medically proven that they are that horrbile?

Thanks in advance!
