I don't know what the statistics are but I also had velmamentous insertions with my first pregnancy (they called it a battledore placenta) I think it is the same that you are speaking of. Mine was diagnosed on u/s. He was born at term at 6lb1oz. The condition did not reoccur in my second pregnancy but they did specifically check the insertion sites of the vessels. I don't think there is anything that can be done if it is diagnosed except close monitoring and growth u/s to watch for growth restriction and treat accordingly.
