Re: will a circlage really help? any meticulous precaution against still birth?? dr. aziz , kindly help. From: Liz (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 3 Dec 2002 09:30:50 -0600 (CST)
Hi, I did hear some good news from my doc this week. The placental failure seen in diabetics usually occurs late in the pregnancy (usually after 38 weeks). It also takes weeks to occur and can be detected early on with u/s or NSTs. Many diabetics have only one artery in the umbilical cord instead of 2. At your next u/s ask how many arteries are in the cord and have them check the cord/placenta. My doc gets the equivalent of a blood pressure and heart rate from the cord. One artery is not horrible but must be watched closely since it's the only way the baby get oxygen, etc. You know I'm no doc, but I always thought cerclage was to prevent an incompetent cervix which you don't have. Glad to see everything is OK so far.
