Re: Lorazepam and pregnancyFrom: Renee (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 1 Dec 2002 23:50:12 -0600 (CST)
I am 37 weeks pregnant and have taken Alprazolam (Xanax) 5 times a day and Zoloft 100mg a day throughout my entire pregnancy. I have an anxiety disorder and both of my doctor's (regular OB and High Risk Specialist), as well as my psychiatrist agreed that the risk of NOT taking the medication far outweighed the potential risks of taking the medication. I was seen by a Genetics Counselor before I ever became pregnant, and she assured me that human studies - at least for Xanax - show no significant risk for birth defects. However, there is a chance that my baby will have some withdrawal from the medication lasting 1-2 days. Withdrawing from this type of medication is something you should discuss with your own OB and your psychiatrist. You should not just stop taking the medication, especially if you've been recently hospitilized. It may be riskier to your baby to NOT be on the medicine. That is for your doctors to decide. I can tell you that I have had numerous ultrasounds, non-stress tests, etc. (for other issues like hypertension and Gestational Diabetes) and my baby is just FINE. Five fingers, five toes... active and healthy. If you need any more info., don't hesitate to e-mail me. Regards, Renee
