A combination of factors which include the pressure from the presenting part of the fetus, as well as that of the amniotic sac, on the cervix; the softening of the cervix and the contractions of the muscles of the uterus. Dilation goes up to approximately 10cm because that's the maximum diameter of the outlet of the bony pelvis in the portion where it is caovered by the tissues of the dilating cervix.
