I think evaporation lines are what people often call false positives. False positives themselves, the actual measuring of HCG when not pregnant in the urine, are very rare. Other false positives caused by the detection of something that interacts with the test as HCG (but not HCG) within the test guidelines (so within the ten minutes or whatever) are becoming increasingly rare with the increasing sophistication of these tests. Sometimes the expression false positive is also used when someone actually is briefly pregnant but has a chemical pregnancy and their period shows up at or around the time it normally did. Good luck!
