Lisa,

I started my baby on cereal in the morning at about 3 months although my pediatrcian wanted me to wait until 4 months. He was really hungry in the mornings from sleeping about 8 hours a night. He was ready to eat (showed signs such as watching my food when I eat, not thrusting food back out of his mouth when fed, could sit up in a chair) too. Once I added an evening meal as well, he did not sleep better at night. On the contrary, he tends to want to get up in the middle of the night. I think it is because he is now missing the last bottle of the night because he is too full from dinner (he eats when we do or has a fit because he wants food - I think he'd eat steak if I let him!). The prevailing theory right now in America appears to be waiting for food (even cereal in a bottle) until 4 - 6 months. 6 weeks might be too early.
