I replied, below, but perhaps you didn't see it. It is actually quite common to experience these "shooting pains" in fact,

I am also 36 weeks and experience this on a daily basis, usually 10 or 15 times and sometimes in both legs. Basically it's sciatic nerve pain, the baby is in a position and putting pressure on that nerve and causing the pain and sometimes numbness as well. It's definatly agonizing, and I have yet to find a good remedy for it. I've tried getting baby to move position, but to no avail. My OB says other than trying to get the baby to swithc positions there isn't much I can do and to just do my best and hang in there, only a few weeks to go!
