Re: 'Thick meconium' automatic indication for c-section?From: Eni (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 30 Oct 2002 12:15:23 -0600 (CST)
In this instance I would not argue. The child could aspirate on the meconium while traveling through the birth canal and the results could be fatal. At the very least, you risk the child developing serious problems because of it. If you do a search on meconium aspiration, you will find what the risks could be. The likelyhood that this will happen to you probably isn't that great unless you go days past your due date. Your doc just wants to be up front with you giving you different scenarios. More docs should do that because many women are caught off guard not realizing that things could potentially go wrong but there are things that can be done about it. Do not consider yourself a failure if you do end up needing a c-section for whatever reason. Your health and the health of the baby are most important. No one gets extra points in life for giving birth a certain way.
