'Thick meconium' automatic indication for c-section?

My OB told me if my water breaks and there is "thick" meconium (he did stress only if it's thick) it's straight off to the operating room for me. No comment on whether it depends on baby showing signs of distress or not.

Is that reasonable, or should I refuse unless there are other clear signs that the baby is in real distress?
