? for Doctor - Re: 40 year old woman trying to conceiveFrom: Kelly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 5 Oct 2002 20:03:14 -0500 (CDT)
I posted this message before and got answers from a couple of other women, but I would like a dr's opinion as well. I am going to be 40 in a couple of months. My husband and I want to get pregnant. I have 2 children by a previous marriage and he doesn't have any children. My youngest child is 12 and it took 10 months to conceive him. I went to my dr. recently for a pre-conception check-up. He told me that I should try to get pregnant for 6-9 months and if I didn't get pregnant, I should come back. He did not do any tests aside from a routine pap smear. In addition, I have been taking HCTZ for a year for hypertension and was taking Zocor for boarderline high cholesteral, but the dr told me to stop the Zocor. He did start me on prenatal vitimins. Is it common practice to have 40 year old women try on their own for 6-9 months before talking to a reproductive endocrinologist or doing any testing to make sure she is doing well fertility-wise?
