Pain Medication during pregnancyFrom: Shelly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 2 Oct 2002 17:57:37 -0400
I am 5 wks pregnant. I have been trying to get pregnant for the last three months through a fertility specialist. We decided to take a month off & surprisingly I am pregnant. I suffer from Fibromyalgia, cervical spondynosis and have terrible lower back pain. I was taking 60mg of oxycontin a day, 1-2 tablets of vicoden for break through pain, celebrex 200mg 2 x day and Zanaflex 4mg 2 @ bed. When I started trying to get pregnant, I stopped the Celebrex all together & when I would be ovulating, I stopped all meds but the Vicoden. Since I was trying to get pregnant my pain management dr cut my Oxycotin down to 10mg 3-4 x day. This was at best manageable. Needles to say since I was not really trying to get pregnant, I was taking the Oxycotin 10mg 3-4 x day & the vicodin 1 tab day & the Zanaflex. I am worried that the Zanaflex will cause birth defects. Also, I am in horrible pain right now. I am sleeping about 3-4 hrs a night & I am only 5 wks pregnant. My question is what can I take for pain during my pregnancy. Tylenol does nothing for me. I can't imagine going through the next 35 wks of pregnancy in the horrible pain that I am in now & not getting any sleep. I have 2 boys now & our lives are very busy. I also work full time, so it isn't like I can lay around and rest. My husband is very supportive and does all he can to help me with them. My pain management dr sd that he doesn't feel that it should be a problem with me taking the oxycotnin & it won't cause birth defects, but my baby would probably be addicted. He sd that if they gave the baby the medication when he/she was born, then the baby shldn't have any w/draw symptoms. When I stopped taking my medication I did not have any w/draw symptoms. Could this mean that my baby wouldn't either. I am scared for myself and my baby. I desperately want this baby. Any advise that you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Shelly
