Cervical length/funneling question

At my 16.5 week ultrasound, my doctor checked my cervical length and it was 39mm. However, during the exam, it funneled down to 30mm. He was extremely concerned and explained that this could indicate incompetent cervix. He had me come back at 18.5 weeks and did another vaginal ultrasound and there was no funneling and my cervix measured 39mm. Of course, I was very relieved, but I am still scared. This is my first pregnancy and I am 34 years old and have been in great health. My doctor has me scheduled to come in at 21.5 weeks, (next week) and he will do another measurement. If everything turns out O.K., why would I have been funneling at 16.5 weeks? He said it looked like I was having a contraction on the ultrasound monitor. How common is that? How many doctors check for these things on a regular basis with patients who are not high risk? Thank you in advance for any insight you can shed. This is a great website!
