Re: IVF and AnesthesiaFrom: LaurieB (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 30 Sep 2002 07:01:57 -0500 (CDT)
I had what is called "twilight sleep" with my IVF. This may be the same as low-level general anesthesia. I have also had an epidural (when I gave birth to the little angel conceived through IVF). To me the epidural was more scary and your doctor is right about it being more serious than general anesthesia. With general anesthesia, the medicine is given through an IV in a vein in your hand or arm. Usually the worse thing that happens at the site of the IV is a big bruise. With an epidural, if they screw up when putting it in, they can cause damage to your spinal column. I personally recovered faster from the twilight sleep than the epidural too. Personally I think the low-level general anesthesia is great for the IVF. Your out enough not to feel the egg retrievel, but not out so much that you are really nauseous and groggy when they wake you up. Good luck on the IVF!!!!
