IVF and Anesthesia

I am supposed to have an IVF later this month. My doctor says that low-level general anesthesia is the norm, that an epidural is possible but is more serious than the general anesthesia. I would much rather avoid general anesthesia, and want to know if there are any other local alternatives, besides an epidural. From my perspective, the less the better, and I'm willing to put up with considerable discomfort to avoid more anesthesia. Any feedback (professional, personal experience) would be appreicated.
