Re: INDOCIN during 32 weeks

I am not a doctor, but do have a lot of experience with PTL and the drugs used for it.

I thought I would add to what the doctor here said...most doctors will not give Indocin after week 30 or so, although the "books" say it is ok up until week 34. I was on Indocin for a time during my last pregnancy, but my perinatologist stopped it at 30 weeks and switched back to terbutaline...just to be safe. If your doctor's concern is PTL, not just getting rid of the pain you are having, why don't you ask if you can try a "safer" third trimester drug like terbutaline or Procardia. I'd think it better to be safe...

The problem with Indocin is that it can cause premature closure of the ductus arteriosis (the vessel that directs blood away from the lungs since a fetus does not need to get O2 from the lungs). It normally closes after birth when a baby begins to breath air.

I'd call your doctor soon and discuss this with him/her...
