2.7 cm cervix @29.5 weeks -- no funneling. Is this a problem?

Hello,

I am currently 29w4 days pregnant with my first child. I am very confused about a Dr's appt. I had today, and could really use a second opinion.

I began having contractions very early -- around 19 weeks. At 22 weeks, the Dr. did a U/S of the cervix and said there was "plenty of cervix" -- no problem or sign of shortening (though he didn't give me an actual measuement).

At 24 weeks, I went to the hospital due to increased contractions. The Dr. put me on nifedipine 20 mg. 4X/day, but did not do any follow up U/S of the cervix because he said the contractions "weren't strong enough to cause a change" to the cervix.

Over the last few weeks, the contractions have seemingly lessened, both in strength and frequency -- to the point the Dr. recommended I start taking them 3X/day rather then 4X/day, and perhaps even "taper off."

Today (at my insistence) I had another U/S of the cervix, which showed my cervix to be 2.7 cm. No funneling or dilation was noted. The doctor just said to keep taking the nifedipine and increase it again to 4X/day, and to return in 3 weeks, and he would do a (digital) check of the cervix again at that time.

Is 2.7 a reasonable length for the cervix to be at almost 30 weeks? I keep reading that 3.5-4.0 cm is "normal." Am I at increased risk for early delivery? Is a follow-up in three weeks reasonable, or should I be seen earlier? Should I seek a second opinion?

Thanks very much for your input. I can't help but be afraid of a sudden and precipitous delivery in the next few weeks...
