35 weeks and dialating with previous tears of cervixFrom: Rebecca (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 10 Sep 2002 22:45:08 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I am 35 weeks pregnant and am dialated almost 3cm. my doctor put me on a medication at 34 weeks when it was found that I was dialating called procardia. I was hoping you could tell me exactly what this medication is supposed to do to help stop preterm labor from starting. I have two children already and with the first had a very long and difficult labor resulting in the use of forceps and a vaccum extractor. My second childs labor lasted only 2 hours and he was born a day before I would have been 37 weeks. When I arrived at the hospital I was 4cm dialated and they broke my water. One contracion later the baby had torn my cervix and was crowning and the next contraction he was out. The doctors told me of the tears in my cervix although they did not repair any of them and mentioned that it might possibly tear again if I had another pregnancy. My second question is do these previous tears have anything to do with my cervix dialating early in this pregnancy and at what stage would my cervix tear again when I do go into labor? If it does tear again why would this occur instead of normal dialation and effacement? Any responses would be very helpful. Thank You! Rebecca
