General Breastfeeding Debate PostFrom: Lisa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 31 Aug 2002 16:59:33 -0500 (CDT)
I don't want to bring up and start the heated debate on breastfeeding that was occuring earlier in the month, but I just thought that it was interesting to point out that different cultures consider breastfeeding in very different lights. Here in Norway, 95% of new mothers breastfeed their children while in America it is only 50% at the moment. I'm not sure why the large difference, but generally in Europe, it is the norm to breastfeed. I think in America (I am american by the way) it was taboo to talk about these things as recently as 5 years ago, thus there was not alot of information about the pros and cons of breastfeeding. Of course every woman has their own opinion and should never be pressured into doing something they may not agree with. I wasn't breastfed and have led a generally healthy life so far. Now that there is so much information and research on the subject, it is every mothers responsibility to become informed and then judge what is best for herself and her own child.
