8 weeks is very early for a first ultrasound! They usually do them at about 18 weeks! They do not need to do an ultrasound to check the heartbeat. They can check it with a doppler heart monitor. They just put a little gel on your belly and place the hand-held small monitor on your belly and try to find where the baby is laying. You may or may not be able to hear it at that early stage, but it is possible. You can even buy these at places like Target, however, I don't know if it's a great idea otherwise you will check it every day and freak out if it doesn't work right. Check with your prenatal caregiver and explain that you wish to come in and check that the heartbeat is ok.

I'm sure everything is ok..good luck and remember that your body is going through incredible changes at the moment. Try not to analyze every little twinge you feel. I had low back pain up to my 8th month of pregnancy.
