resolution of back problems before trying to get pregnant? From: Rachel (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 27 Aug 2002 13:25:40 -0500 (CDT)
I am 30, and would like to start trying to get pregnant (first time) within the next year. I have been under treatment for chronic lower back pain since January of 2001, when I was bedridden for 2 months. I was diagnosed with mild disc compression and arthritis, and was told I have an extra vestigial vertebra, which is probably contributing to the compression. Since then, I have been to two physical therapists, an orthopedist, and a pain management specialist. I have lost most of the weight I gained during my inactivity, but I still have about 30 pounds to lose before I reach a healthy BMI (I am 6' tall). I take a low-dose tricyclic antidepressant nightly, prescribed by my pain specialist, and my pain only relapses if I stand on concrete for several hours or lift improperly. My goal is to get closer to a healthy weight before trying to get pregnant- I exercise regularly now and eat a very healthy diet- but I would like to know if there is anything else I should do. Should I ask to be taken off the medication? Will I be unable to take anti-inflammatory drugs (OTC) during pregnancy? Part of my pain management is daily use of a warm (95F) whirlpool- will I have to stop doing this when I become pregnant? Also, I have a family history of high BP and Type II diabetes (I am fine on both counts). Will that give me an increased risk of gestational diabetes and preeclampsia? Thank you- Rachel
