CMV and amniocentesisFrom: Wendy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 23 Aug 2002 08:24:50 -0500 (CDT)
Its been a while, and I'm almost due. Bottom line -- I had a positive CMV IgG at 8 weeks, then a positive IgM at 10 weeks gestation. Baby showed echogenic bowel at 17 weeks when an amnio was performed. Got my results at 20 weeks they were NEGATIVE for CMV (performed a PCR on the fluid) and my ultrasound at 21 weeks did not show echogenic bowel. I am now 34 weeks and have not had an ultrasound since. My measurements, etc as well as kick counts suggest that the baby is growing normally with good activity levels. Just how accurate is an amnio in detecting CMV infection? Every time I read about a mother who showed echogenic bowel and had an amnio that tested positive for CMV I get nervous. This baby doesn't seem as big as my first child at this stage (though I feel huge and have gained the same amount of weight). I know that the March of Dimes website said that its at least 80% accurate, but that 20% seems like a large margin of error. Just wanted an opinion.
