37 Week Induction??

I am currently 35w 2d. My doctor will be leaving town when I am 37w and 3d and will not be returning for 2-3 weeks. (Her own daughter is having a baby.) At my appt. yesterday my cervix was very soft and thinning out, but there was not any dialation yet.

The doctor asked me IF my cervix was cooperative on my next visit, would I want to be induced, before she left town. We've been talking about inducing due to the apparent large size of this baby and my past history of a big baby. (I was induced with mt last baby at 38w 0d, and gave birth to a 8lb. 3oz. baby. My doctor didn't think I would have been able to vaginally deliver a baby much larger than that.)

I know that if I have not dialated any by next week's appointment, the question is moot, as I don't want to risk a failed induction and have to have a c-section because of a scheduling problem with the doctor or my own convenience. But I wonder if 37 weeks is too early too attempt an induction? (My previous induction was due to pregnancy-induced hypertension, which is not a factor at all in my current pregnancy.)

Any thoughts would be appreciated!
