37 wks and confused about c-section vs induction

Background: This is my first pregnancy. I am due on Sept 7th and my baby was measured at 6.25 lbs on my 36wk u/s. I have no signs of labour whatsoever at this point (cervix is closed shut, long and hard). I supposedly have a mild case of gestational diabetes and am 39 years old. I also have a very narrow frame and pelvic bone. When I was born, I was a week late, took 3 days to come out, and measured 8.6lbs at birth. I am physically a carbon-copy of my mom.

My doctor doesn't seem to want me to go post-term with this baby. He said that this is mainly bc of my age and bc this baby may be larger than normal. He has told me that when I get to 39 weeks, if there are no signs of labour, he will schedule me for a c-section the next week. Should I just accept this? Everyone has told me that I will no doubt have a horrible time delivering vaginally, so there is a high probability that I will end up with an emergency c-section anyway, but my sister and some of my friends think I should still try for vaginal. Should I ask for an induction rather than a scheduled "c" if I go beyond 39 weeks? I know that there are risks with an induction as well. Do I have a shot at a successful vaginal delivery if I go to term or past? What do you think are my odds of ending up with an emergency c-section, given the specs above? I don't really have a preference either way, I just want the safest option for my baby. I'd appreciate anyone's input, especially the docs. Thanks!
